California Teachers Retirement System (CALSTRS)

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE'RE DOING

Established in 1913, The California State Teachers’ Retirement System is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world and provides a secure retirement to more than 1 million members and beneficiaries.

CalSTRS advances organizational sustainability practices that promote long-term value creation, responsible investment strategies, stewardship of our natural resources and engagement with our stakeholder community. We maintain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4.1 Operations and Maintenance Platinum certification for our West Sacramento headquarters.

We are expanding our headquarters to include a new building using sustainable construction, green building practices, energy conservation, and onsite renewable energy generation. The expansion project is financed through tax-exempt lease-revenue green bonds issued through a conduit issuer, the California Infrastructure and Economic Development Bank. Completion is expected in spring 2024.

Through our business efforts and employee programs, we work to reduce our effect on the environment and sustain the resilience of the fund. We demonstrate our strong commitment to long-term sustainability principles in our annual Sustainability Report referencing the Global Reporting Initiatives Standards.
