As part of Governor Schwarzenegger's Green Building Initiative, the Department of General Services is overseeing the installation of solar photovoltaic systems at state-owned facilities.

Since 2006,  4.2 megawatts of on-site electrical generation have been installed in projects statewide, offsetting a portion of power normally purchased, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuel-based power production.  Agreements to install an additional eight megawatts of solar power at 16 Cal State University sites were announced in October 2008

Electricity generated from these projects is delivered directly to the state facilities under a power purchase agreement with SunEdison, which owns and maintains the systems.
