Information for State Purchasing Officials

Why Buy Green?

Environmentally Preferable Purchasing or buying green involves the purchase of goods and services that have a reduced impact on human health and the environment as compared to other goods and services serving the same purpose.

Buying green is all about smart purchasing. State purchasing professionals have a responsibility to buy products that give California the best value. Environmentally preferable products are long lasting, high-quality, less toxic, reusable, and easy to recycle.

Environmentally preferable products also use less materials, water and energy- minimizing the impact on California's natural environment.

Buying green is also the law. See California Public Contract Code, sections 12400-12404 for more information.
