The state of California leases millions of square feet of office space from commercial real estate owners.
The Governor's Green Building Initiative requires the Department of General Services and other state agencies to seek out and select, whenever cost-effective, leases for spaces of 5,000 square feet or more in buildings that meet a minimum U.S. Energy Star rating whenever such spaces are cost-effective.
Where feasible, the state is also seeking buildings that can or have obtained LEED certification.
