Cogeneration, also referred to as combined heat and power (CHP), can be a cost-effective source of reliable energy as well as heating and cooling- the single most expensive operating expense in typical buildings.
Major cogeneration units are located at the following State of California facilities:

- Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, California Institute for Men, Chino (28 megawatts)
- Department of Mental Health, Metropolitan State Hospital, Los Angeles (28 megawatts)
- UC Berkeley (25 megawatts)
- UC Santa Cruz (3 megawatts)
- CSU Channel Islands, Camarillo (28 megawatts)
The State of California has other smaller generation units operating at the California Public Utilities Commission/Gov. Edmund "Pat" Brown Building in San Francisco, the Elihu Harris State Office Building in Oakland, and the San Francisco Civic Center Building. |
