Solar Panels on CalEPA Building, Sacramento |
The Green Building Initiative directs State agencies under the direct executive authority of the Governor to cooperate in taking measures to reduce grid-based energy purchases for state-owned buildings 20 percent by 2015, through cost-effective efficiency measures and distributed generation technologies.
In addition, the Green Building Action Plan directs that each new building or large renovation project initiated by the state shall also evaluate the merits of clean, on-site power generation such as solar panels and fuel cells.
Distributed generation is the generation of electricity on or near the site where the power is to be used.
Integrating renewable energy producing technologies into state buildings will further reduce the amount of energy consumed from the grid, contributing to meeting the Green Building Order's goals.
