Cost

Note: The following discussion on cost is general and is not meant to reflect specific contracts or to supersede existing mandates or policies.

Copier paper prices vary based upon a number of factors, such as the amount of paper purchased, type and timing of delivery, and often the recycled content. Copier paper prices often rise as recycled content increases; however, some organizations have been able to purchase recycled copier paper for the same price as virgin paper, especially when they are able to order in bulk.

Tips on Buying Recycled Paper

  • Do not be discouraged if the first paper you find is more expensive. A little searching and discussions between procurement staff, building management staff (for knowledge of delivery and storage options), and paper suppliers can yield price-competitive options. If necessary, talk to agencies in your region about cooperative purchasing. Additional tips for getting the best price for recycled paper are available from the California Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Management System. [15]
  • Lower your paper budget by reducing paper use. If possible, apply the resulting savings to buying recycled paper. [16]
  • If possible, "apply recycling income and savings, such as payments for collected paper or avoided disposal costs, to funding the difference in costs for recycled paper."
  • Remember that paper markets are always in a state of flux.

Prices for 100 percent postconsumer recycled content paper are more price-competitive today than at their introduction in the late 1990s. As demand grows, prices are expected to fall in line with those of other copier papers.
